Gary V. Powell lives with his beautiful wife and two intrepid dogs near the shores of lovely Lake Norman, North Carolina.

He is a Pushcart Prize nominee, a 2023 deGroot Foundation Writer of Note, the winner of the 2022 Press 53/Prime Number short fiction prize, and a finalist or honorable mention for numerous other fiction awards. His work appears in or at the Thomas Wolfe Review, Carvezine, Ocotillo Review, Prime Number, Atticus Review, Smokelong Quarterly, Best New Writing 2015, Sleep is a Beautiful Color: the 2017 National Flash Fiction Day Anthology and other literary magazines, reviews, and anthologies. His stories “Uniformity of Carcass” and “Fifty-Cal,” were finalists for the 2023 Doris Betts Fiction Prize and are forthcoming as O’Henry Prize nominees in the North Carolina Literary Review.

Mr. Powell is also a poet. His chapbook, Super Blood Wolf Moon, won Kallisto Gaia Press’s 2020 Contemporary Poetry Prize. His chapbook, Permafrost, is forthcoming from Finishing Line Press in 2023. His poem "5 AM,” which appears in Kakalak 2022 (Moonshine Review Press) received a nomination for a Pushcart Prize. His poem, “On the Night of Your Deployment,” was selected as a runner-up for the Gregory O’Donoghue International Poetry Competition and appears in Southword 44, 2023.
